My 2014 30-day DeCluttering Challenge
Here are my posts from Facebook, for the month of September 2014:
I'm doing it! I'm looking forward to purging some accumulated stuff. Do you want to do the challenge as well (only at your house)?
Cate R. knows my mission to downsize and, thoughtfully, sent me a link about someone who was describing a de-cluttering challenge. It inspired me. It feels right to me at this time. I am going to start Sept. 1st (a 30-day month). I'm giving you a little head start to feel inspired.
There are other 30-day challenges, but this one is to eliminate ONE item on day one; eliminate TWO items on day two, and so on. That goes on every through day thirty. When you get to day thirty, you will have eliminated 465 items. I would like to be 465 items lighter! It doesn't matter what you do with the items: trash, give away, sell, resale, goodwill. I'm excited and looking forward to it.
It is in my nature to want to change things up, so to me, it makes sense to do it in reverse. It seems more logical to give away 30 things on day one, 29 things on day two, 28 things on day three, and so on. I imagine that at the beginning I'll be more psyched to make big changes, and by the end of the challenge, I'll be struggling to find things to eliminate…maybe.
I've already been thinking about what kinds of categories of things to eliminate, and making a list. I think I'll do the Tupperware/storage cupboard one day, and sock drawer another day, my linen closet one day, and my magazine bin another. Those are chores I've been wanting to do for a long time.
So…I'm doing it! I'll be working on it. Are you in? Anybody……anybody?
DAY 1 of DeCluttering Challenge.
Don't worry, I won't post everyday. This was one of the projects I was looking forward to having accomplished. DONE. 130 pieces from my Tuppercare/Plasticware cupboard recycled. I found Asher's Cheerio container in the back. Awww.
DAY 2 of DeCluttering Challenge.
I am supposed to get rid of 29 things. Today I eliminating 30 things! Yeah. I'll keep working on the books. I can get more tomorrow….I'm sure. I struggle with giving them all away. I know I could probably re-sell some of them online, and probably a few more at a garage sale, but it is nice to get them out of my life. I'll let them go!
Day 3 of DeCluttering Challenge.
I swear I could visit this bookshelf and remove something everyday. It is emotionally challenging for me. Taking out books is like ripping off a band-aid to me. It hurts, but…I'm doing it. I getting OK with it. Today my goal was to remove 28 things….I did 29.
Day 4 of DeCluttering Challenge
The vitamin and supplement basket. This has been overflowing for a while. As I was cleaning things out and being ruthless, I found things with an expiration date of 1998, and 2007. Yikes. Out they went. The goal today was 27 items and I threw out 27. I think I could do more if I kept going. I haven't even touched the medicine cabinet or linen closet yet.
Day 5 of DeCluttering Challenge
Onto an overlooked corner of the living room - the speaker that doesn't work and the VCR tapes that are stacked there. I went through my 'exercise' tapes and the stack, and came up with 27 to give away. My goal was 26 items today. I was hanging on to some favorites, but with our current configurations of game station and DVD player, I had to ask myself if I'd ever really try to figure out the VCR setup to watch….nope. Out they go. I still had some tiny Christmas stockings rested there and overlooked. Geesh. Almost a year they've been sitting there. Time to de-clutter. (I did save the JUSTIFIED DVD set before I tossed the other things.)
Day 6 of DeCluttering Challenge
My goal today is to get rid of 25 things. I went through a small stack of Christmas and Birthday cards we had sitting on the back of the end table. Each time when the special day has past we put the cards in the stack and ignore them. I had some special cards from my 50th birthday still there (3 yrs. ago), and Christmas from 2012 and 2013 - still sitting out. I said a prayer of thanks for the sender, and sent them on their way to the recycle bin. Tomorrow will be the other stack on my secretary.
Day 7 of DeCluttering Challenge
Well - one week down. Thanks for going on my journey with me, and for your encouragement. Today I continued with the sorting of cards and letters. My goal was to get rid of 24 things, and I did. So far in the first week, I eliminated 292 things that were taking up space and energy. I'm feeling a bit refreshed, and excited for some forward progress. I feel a bit lighter too! Looking forward to the next week.
Day 8 of DeCluttering Challenge
On a roll….goal for today…23 things. I tackled the under table bin of magazines and catalogs. I got rid of 36.
Day 9 of DeCluttering Challenge
I continued with the catalogs and magazines. My goal was 22 things…I got rid of 24. I probably could have gotten rid of more, but I just did the ones that were mine (not my husband's or son's).
Day 10 of the DeCluttering Challenge
Do you think I'm going to run out of things to discard? Or just run out of energy? I hope not because my accumulations seem to be never ending.
Today the goal is to eliminate 21 things. I tackled the key organizer-thingy. I eliminated 54 brochures and coupons and put away my summer hats and purse.
Day 11 of DeCluttering Challenge
I didn't know whether I should post something so frivolous on a somber day of remembrance of 9/11. That day changed so many people's lives.
But we are here today to continue on with things, and to try to make the world a better place. On the home front, my goal was to eliminate 20 things today. I tackled my belts and scarves and purged 20 items for garage sale and donations. I could probably do some more, but that'll be for another day.
Day 12 of DeCluttering Challenge
Hi, my name is Ann, I am a hoarder.
Onto my sock drawer. I did some MORE eliminating. My goal was 19 things. I eliminated 19 PAIR of socks. I still have 93 PAIR left! 93. Yup….you heard me…..all good and useable. I got rid of my pair of socks I still had when I visited NYC with Beth G. in the early 1980's. It sounds like a ridiculous amount but when you break it down, I have 9 pr. of white crew socks, I have white footies, then I have gray, brown, navy, and khaki crew socks. Then to wear them with my knee high boots, I have knee high navy, beige, gray, and black….for heavy wool winter socks, I have 9 pr…...and so on.
As you can see…I still have more I can eliminate. I was watching some video bloggers talking about their minimalist wardrobes and each of them have like 6 pr. of socks. Oh boy….I'm a hoarder.
Day 13 and the DeCluttering Challenge continues
My goal is 18 items to eliminate. I eliminated 9 purses/change purses/coin purses/etc. and 9 necklaces. They are going to a garage sale pile and/or Goodwill.
Day 14 of DeCluttering Challenge
We have an old bathroom under-the-sink cupboard. OLD. It accumulates clutter for things that are temporarily there, until they get brought upstairs, and for things that are rarely used. I DECLUTTERED and SORTED. Better now. The goal was to eliminate 17 things. I threw out 22. It needs to get painted with new shelf paper, but at least it is cleaned and reorganized for now.
Day 15 of DeCluttering Challenge
I'm still visiting my overflowing accessories. Today my goal is 16 items. I eliminated 14 bracelets and 2 scarves. I haven't worn them in a while, hopefully I won't miss them. I am half-way through my month-long challenge. I am working on a blog-post right now.
Day 16 of DeCluttering Challenge
I am working on the closet and bins. My goal was 15 items. I eliminated 4 pair of shoes and 11 articles of clothing. I am making a stack to take to the resale shops and another stack for donation. I'll continue on over the next few days.
Day 17 of DeCluttering Challenge
I can not believe how busy today was. I didn't stop going until after 8 pm. Didn't even get out for a walk. I had plans to work on clothing but THAT didn't happen. I did accomplish banking, ordered roofing, go to the veterinarian, go to a Dr. appt., go to work (late) worked until almost 6, then home to eat, then driving around checking out examples of shingles for roofing, visited and cleaned up after a cat, and then home to declutter.
The goal was to eliminate 14 items. I was able to get rid of 16 non-essential files, and paperwork. I'm calling it a night!
Day 18 of DeCluttering Challenge
The goal was 13 items. I eliminated 19 t-shirts and craft items from the closet. I had been working on cutting up t-shirts for the rugs made of t-shirts as seen on Pinterest. I had done 2 chair cushions and do not like them. They stretch out and don't lie flat. If they were a rug on the floor they'd be a tripping hazard. I hung onto this project for months and months. I've decided to let 'em go, and back to Salvation Army.
Day 19 of DeCluttering Challenge
I hope I am not losing my FACEBOOK FRIENDS, as well. My friends I've 'reached' have drastically reduced. Anyhow, I'll keep up with posting my challenges because that is the promise I made to myself.
Today the goal was 12 items. I eliminated 19 things from the back of my closet shelf. That was the tough part. There were some candles and trinkets from my childhood. I found little pins and things I had forgotten about. Hmmmmm. Now what to do with them? A few I kept, a few I am waiting on a decision, and a few are going in the trash or goodwill. I found a beautiful letter from Grandma Sedlecky, that I'll cherish. She said about a photo Mom had apparently sent her, "you look smart in your Camp Fire Uniform"….awwwwww…it was from 1971. I was ten yrs. old.
Day 20 of DeCluttering Challenge
I am working on the top of my closet. It'll take me a few days to get some organization worked out. My goal was 11 items, but I was able to eliminate 12 odds and ends - some tights, an old slip with the elastic shot, some jewelry cases etc.
You'll never guess what I found. The watch case with the receipt inside. It was purchased on my birthday in 1994. Jim and I were looking for a watch that had a sweep second hand we could time my contractions (I was 5 mos. pregnant at the time). On the receipt it said I purchase the extended warranty - from WITMARK. LOL Anyone remember that place?
Day 21 of DeCluttering Challenge
Found some treasures: kept some, tossed some. Goal was 10 items. I eliminated 29 items today. Found 3 GR Press Front Page: Asher's birthday, 9/11, and 2000 Y2K. Keeping those.
Day 22 of DeCluttering Challenge
I couldn't continue with the bottom of our bedroom closet which I started yesterday. I just couldn't find the emotion and energy to tackle it. I DID walk into the pantry/closet this morning at 6:30 am and say to myself "I have to take care of this". 8:10 I am finished!! Now to get ready for work.
My goal was to eliminate 9 items. I got rid of 58 wrapping paper and gift bags as well as 26 house decorations that were cluttering the closet for a grand total of 84 things today! (I didn't even count any of the plastic bags used to discard the trash.) Some was recycled, much was trashed. Decorations going to garage sale. Most of it just needed to get reorganized and find a new home.
This is a well used closet. It is used to store food/dry goods and cans, lightbulbs, tape, glue, serving ware, bags, storage bags, gift wrapping, shoes, cleaning supplies, vacuum cleaners, etc. We'll see how long it stays this way.
Day 23 of DeCluttering Challenge - Happy Autumn, Everyone!
Now is a good time to change out the closet, evaluate, and get rid of things that aren't fitting or suitable. I changed mine on Sept. 1 but am still downsizing. MUCH is still packed away in bins and space-bags. BUT I was able to pull 30 closet items for resale and donation, while my goal was 8.
I was told that the Veterans Facility (in a back bldg. off Monroe - closer to Coit) accepts donation of mens AND women's clothing. They have a little store for veterans and their wives for free, so they don't have to spend what little income they receive. I'm going to check it out and drop off some things Thursday.
Day 24 of DeCluttering Challenge - nothing dramatic - but every little bit helps.
Today I eliminated 9 papers & notes hanging on our refrigerator. My goal was 7. It's funny how you hang notes to remind yourself, but you get so used to seeing them that they get overlooked and are invisible after a while. I would have cleaned off all the magnets too, but none are MINE, the guys will have to decide if they want to part with them or not.
Day 25 of DeCluttering Challenge
I was finally able to tackle the memento box at the bottom of our closet. My goal was 6 items. I was able to throw out 77 items and relocate a few treasures.
Day 26 of DeCluttering Challenge - Almost to the end!
My goal was 5 things. I went through my bins a couple more times and was able to part with 12 clothing items. Yeah!
Day 27 of DeCluttering Challenge
I still have many things to get rid of. Today I am helping at a garage sale, so we'll see how many things I can eliminate. I did an easy one today. My goal was 4 items. I got rid of 7 things from my keychain and wallet.
Day 28 of DeCluttering Challenge
My goal was 3 items. I had pulled out 13 items for the garage sale that I hadn't counted on other days. They were odds and ends: some candle holders, a jacket, some house decorations, vases, etc. Not a thing sold, but they aren't coming back in the house.
Day 29 of DeCluttering Challenge
I'm cleaning up odds and ends. My goal was 2 items. I was able to eliminate 15: 2 pieces of jewelry, 5 pair of shoes/sandals, 2 old Holiday cards I've been holding on to send but are past their prime, and 6 brochures/files. I have only ONE day left of the challenge, but still have some major clutter-zones to get to.
Day 30 - LAST DAY of DeCluttering Challenge!!
I'm sure YOU are thrilled to not see these posts, anymore. Well today the goal is ONE ITEM. I could have gotten rid of dozens more items, so I'd say today is more symbolic.
I am giving to Salvation Army, my makeup mirror. I got this mirror as a present from Diane Hogan Chulski for my High School Graduation. IT IS 35 YEARS OLD! The lighting still works! But the stand does not. So I don't use it anymore. Sadly it doesn't magnify as much as I need for my old eyes. But it is an example of me holding onto things for sentimental reasons. Oddly, the minute I had it in my hands and was going to take a photo - Diane Chulski called me this morning! How spooky is that? We have always been on the same wavelength. She gave her blessing to "GET RID OF IT!". She always had an identical mirror and I admired it and HER. She is a year older than me, and I always thought her glamorous to see her put on her makeup using it. The mirror symbolized to me, growing up.
It is time to let it go! I need to let go what isn't working for me at this point in my life.
Thanks for going along on this journey! Thanks for all your support! I was able to let go of 859 items that were cluttering my home.
